Spreckels' Premier!
Sunday, June 19 at the 2 pm concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park, San Diego, Dr Carol Williams had the pleasure of introducing to the audience Marie Elizalde Peck -- the great, granddaughter of John D. Spreckels. John D. Spreckels gave the Austin organ to the City of San Diego on December 31, 1914 and, this year is the 90th birthday of the Spreckels Organ. A commemorative bust by sculptor Claudio D'Agostino was unveiled on this special occasion. Pictures can be viewed at the Spreckels Organ Society website
Monday, June 20th was the opening of the International Organ Festival and Carol Williams was joined by Robert Plimpton, Civic Organist Emeritus and former Civic Organist Jared Jacobsen. In the program, the three Chorals of Franck were performed plus duets and trios -- 2,400 people came to the concert. For this historic year, the Spreckels Organ Society commissioned from Dan Locklair, leading American composer, "Spreckels' Fancy" and this was performed by Carol Williams. Dan Locklair attended the premier and also spoke a few words to the audience. Again, photos can be seen at www.sosorgan.com

Carol Williams, San Diego Civic Organist, has just released a new CD on the fantastic Austin organ at St. Mary's College in Moraga, outside San Francisco. The CD is called "Mainly French". The repertoire included on the CD is the majestic First Organ Sonata by Alexandre Guilmant; plus a delightful Verset and March also by the great composer. Also included on this CD are three beautiful transcriptions of works by Claude Debussy -- these three pieces display the wonderful colors of this superb instrument in a bell like acoustic. And, two exciting Toccatas add to the list -- one by the not so well known composer Marcel Paponaud and the other by the Belgian composer Joseph Jongen.
Carol also has two further CDs on the horizon -- one to be recorded in the UK and the other to be recorded in Luxembourg.
This new CD "Mainly French" is available from The Organ Historical Society -- 804 353 9226. www.ohscatalog.org
