Details: The 18th-century composer and theorist Johann Mattheson described the stylus phantasticus, or fantastic style as “the most free and unrestrained manner of composing and singing that one can imagine.” Hallmarks of the style are virtuosic passage work, improvisatory compositional license and violent contrast. According to Mattheson, the intended effect of stylus phantasticus was to overwhelm and astonish. The program will include works by North-German composers Vincent Lübeck, Georg Böhm, Nicolaus Bruhns, Mathias Weckman and Dieterich Buxtehude, concluding with the dramatic Fantasy and Fugue in G Minor of J. S. Bach.
