Details: Please join me for a recital of Bach, Brahms, and Mendelssohn on April 9, 2006 at 2:00PM at St. Patrick's Old Cathedral. The event is part of the Cathedral's bicentennial kick-off. After the performance, there will be a reception during which I will be giving a tour of the 1868 Henry Erben pipe organ. The Old Cathedral is located at Prince and Mott Streets in Nolita (the big stone building surrounded by the gravity-evading brick wall).
For those of you who haven't been up to the organ loft, it's a rare opportunity to see what a 19th-century hydraulic computer looks like. Its sculptural mechanisms, of exemplary craftsmanship, control one of the few remaining large, unaltered mid-19th century pipe organs in its original acoustic space, anywhere. Before the invention of recorded sound and the foundation of philharmonic societies, the organ was the only mechanism able to interpret the European orchestral music and American popular music of the time for large audiences.
